In order to ensure that only registered users have access to the update patches, there is a necessary security door you must pass through. Here's the step-by-step (Warning: This long-winded explanation sounds more complicated than it really is)

  1. The first page you view when you click download is the "Downloads" page, where you are asked to "Click here to complete the patch request form".

  2. The next page you view is the "Update request form", which is a form that you must complete with your name & company, your email address, and your serial number. Complete this form and click the submit button. If the information is correct, the password to install the patch will be e-mailed to you usually within 3 hours. However, if there is increased traffic on the internet there may be a delay. Please be patient, bombarding me with email will not get the password to you any quicker.

  3. If the information you submitted is correct, you will then see the "Update page", which has hyperlinks to the file(s). There may be a few minutes delay between the time you click the Submit button on the request form and the time this page appears. Please be patient, remember, this is the "world wide wait".

After you have accessed the update page, click on the name of the file that you want to download. This will initiate the download procedure.

  1. Your web browser will then pop up a window asking if you want to save or open the file, click Save then OK. Please don't let the virus message alarm you, the patch does not contain any viruses, this warning is always displayed by Internet Explorer.
    Opening

  2. Click OK. You will see a Save As dialog box showing a list of folders and files on your hard drive.
    download prompt

  4. Click the Desktop icon, then click Save.
The file will be downloaded to your computer's hard drive and the link to the file will be on your Windows desktop.

  5. A new window will be displayed showing the download progress.
Depending on the size of the file and the speed of your Internet connection, this may take a while.

  6. You will be notified when downloading has completed. Click the Close button.

Where is the udpate?

"I downloaded the patch but I can't find it, where is it?"

This is the most common mistake people make, they don't pay attention when choosing the "Save in" folder (step 6 above).

The easiest way to find your file is to use the Windows Find utility.

  1. Click the Start button on the Windows task bar, move the pointer up to Find, then Click on Files or Folders.

  2. Type in the name of the file you need to find and click the "Find now" button:
    Find

  3. After the file is found just click on the file icon to begin the installation.

Making Downloads More Accessible

We frequently get calls from folks who can't figure out where their downloaded files have gone. Browsers need to be trained to put them in the right place, otherwise they'll store them in a random location, usually your Windows Temp folder or the application's own directory. Here's how to train your browser. Create a folder called "Download." Put it somewhere easy to find. Inside the My Documents folder or on your Desktop are two popular locations. Next time you download a file, when the browser asks you where to save it, don't just click Save, navigate to the Downloads folder THEN click Save. From now on the browser will start there in its Save dialog.

And here's an added bonus, you can create a shortcut for that Download folder in your Start menu to make it even easier to find, just drag the Download icon to the Start button. If you're using Windows Me or 2000 you'll get a cascading menu that really makes it easy to get to your downloads.
